Deep Indigo Ink

Unlike other inks/ pigments indigo has a nature of its own, showing little shift in colour when used with acid or alkaline modifiers but darkening with iron.

Indigo is naturally insoluble in water, meaning it will need to be shaken well before using and some granulation/ colour variation may occur; we think this adds to the mystique and the wabi sabi nature of this ink.

All Inks are handcrafted in the UK using sustainably sourced natural pigments.

Each 30ml bottle has its own batch date, glass ball bearing inside, (to help re-mix any separated pigments) is preserved with organic clove oil and comes with instructions/ tips on best uses.

Botanical inks blend and mix on an alchemical level rather than standard pigments; that doesn't mean you can’t mix them together; it simply means that adding blue to yellow might not always make green. What this does mean however is that depending on your choice of inks or modifiers you’ll get a variety of tones and colours from one base ingredient. Purely by shifting its ph or adding a little diluted iron water can extend the colour range of once ink.

We’ve added additional photos of ink tests to show you how certain colours may shift and change depending on the modifiers you use.

Caring for your inks

Keep out of direct sunlight and stored upright as much as possible to prevent leakage.

Clove oil has been used as a natural preservative, however with time and multiple uses contamination may occur (causing mould to form) this will not affect the quality of the ink but you will need to remove the mould with a sanitised item - such as the back of a metal teaspoon.

For best practice use a dropper to take ink out of the bottle and work with it on a clean palette or mixing tray.

Granulation when using botanical inks is fairly common as these are rich in pigment and have less fillers then synthetic colours. Small glass balls are added to each bottle to help with blending the inks prior to use. Some colours may have more granulation then others i.e indigo and earth pigments.
